  1. What should be taken away from this video, as well as from all others regarding
psychological illness, is people should be more openly understanding of those
who suffer from things like depression and those who suffer should know the
world is more understanding than they think they are because, like the video
said, plenty of people are suffering from the same thing. It is important to
seek help from others in order to truly get better because psychological
problems like depression can recur, just as it did for the man in the video. The
speaker does give hope that psychological problems can be treated and cured.

I agree that the people who do suffer from depression should seek counsel from professionals and loved ones, to over come their big black dogs

    2. I do believe that other people should be more openly understanding of those who suffer from things like depression like Taylor said, because everything feels like a burden to a person with depression and they need to start look at the new positive outcomes or opportunities as much as possible to take weight off of each burden.

    3. Agree depression is an illness that should be treated with therapy or any cousler. Though many in depression dont notice that they are in depression, most of the time they ignore it and dont seek help. Thats how th depression grows stronger....

    4. i don't know if i would consider it an illness, for some it is an illness (those with medical issues). not to be rude but a lot of this seems like it's easier said than done. if a person is depressed and they don't like talking about their issues, maybe because they feel vulnerable then how will they get help? Depressed people need other people to help them, we can't just say they have to help themselves by going to therapy which sounds easy but depressed people are thinking rationally, because their depressed. its like telling to an anorexic too just eat, they know they should eat but they just cant like that.

    5. yes! seeking professional help is the first step to recovery! no one should deny depression or let it build up inside them..

What I learned from this video is that depression is a an actual mood disorder and that thousands of people suffer from it. Before I used to think that only weak minded people could suffer from depression, but now after learning all about it in the chapter I know I am wrong. Depression can control a person's life, but the individual can never lose hope. They can be helped either with therapy, exercise, or writing their emotions down to keep their depression under control.

    1. I can also agree that the individual should not lose hope because it is possible to get over depression, it all just depends on time and psychological factors.

    2. I agree with Griselda. You cannot stereotype people and assume a certain type of individual is prone to a disorder. Anyone can suffer from a disorder, even people we may not expect.

    3. I just wanted to add that it takes real guts to admit that you have a depression disorder. So anyone who is going through this, before doing anything should really sit down and think to themselves to try and find a better solution. We've all been through it and we all know its tough.

    4. I agree with you, I mean anyone can get depression

  3. This video gives me a whole new perspective of depression. You know those people that always seem to be alone and you call them loners because they have no friends, well I never saw the person as having a major depressive disorder. Now that I know better, I am well aware of these people just needing someone to comfort or talk to them even if they're stubborn about it. Depression can be a long term healing process depending on the situation.

    1. True those who we used to consider loners or emos... were probably the most hurt and depressed and naming them probably made them feel worse about them selves.

      Delete
    2. Being alone and introverted does not mean someone is suffering from depression. Also even people who appear cheerful may be suffering from depression and attempting to disguise it, just as the man in the video was.

      Delete
    3. Some people don't always want to talk, they just need some time to find themselves. It does not mean that they are depressed, but the chances are highl.

      Delete
    4. @taylor chavez Emmanuel didn't say they were introverted he was just talking about people who seem to be loners some might be introverted and some might not be, some loners could actually just be depressed people.
@juan big long name your right some people could just be needing to discover themselves but i don't know if that would be considered being depressed, i think the best thing to do is try to do is empathize with depressed people and help them so that when they feel better they can start helping themselves.

    2. but in all seriousness, it's best to provide help or at least be able to listen to those who are suffering from such sadness. Being unwilling to listen may trigger a feeling of hopelessness within a person with depression

  5. Watching this video makes me realize I probably had a black dog in me sometime in my life. Depression is a tough emotion to overcome, there are people out there who never overcame it and are stiil struggeling or they suicide. When we see a depressed person the first thing we think is that their weird or different from others but naming them brings down their self esteem. Though depression can be reduced with counseling or any type of social therapy so they can interact with others in their surroundings.

I agree that the big black dog does affect everyone at some point in their lives, but it is important to take control of depression and seek out help

    2. I read somewhere, that there was this man who everyday went up to random people, smiled, said hello, and wished them to have a beautiful day. His friends and such would always ask him, "Why do you do that? Don't you think that people will eventually think you're a cook?" The man always replied like this," A dear friend of mine passed away by taking his own life. In the letter that he wrote it said 'If one person were to just say hello and wish me a wonderful day then maybe, just maybe my life would have gotten better."
Suicide is never the answer. Always make sure to beat off that "Big Black Dog". If you can't do it alone, theres always someone out there waiting to wish you and wonderful day and smile.

  6. as the video shows, the biggest step to getting out of depression is chosing to open up to someone. a person suffering from severe depression has a different outlook on life and therefore no longer sees that he/she has the opportunity to keep sadness under control. I think people should really think twice before saying "you'll get over it" or "you're being dramatic" because you never know what the other person is feeling. so seek help! depression affects every aspect of your life

    1. Also, it depends on talking to the right people. You may want to go talk to someone with patience and experience.

      Delete
    2. You make a good point Daisy. Now I'm going to think twice before telling someone "you're being dramatic" I don't ever want to make someone feel worse than they are already feeling

      Delete
    3. I agree that's the breaking point of getting out of having depression... I noticed his depression did get worse when he decided to self-medicate. So, opening up really does help get rid of depression

  7. I don't know the cartoon guy in the video looked like he was suffering an extreme form of depression. people suffer differently and get rid of depression differently, you could of been born with a chemical imbalance and all you need are just a few pills. some people need therapy because they need to know how to handle stressful situations

  8. "Taught him a few new tricks" [Is about to throw stick over the cliff, seems legit haha. But in all seriousness, what stood out to me more was not how to get rid of depression but how to cope and manage. By managing your depression it eventually begins to fade away. Shaming yourself by hiding your depression is difficult as the video showed, and is better to tell your loved ones about your situation.

    1. but sometimes talking to just One person you trust/care for is enough to make you view things differently or feel like youre able to let go of some sadness for a bit

  9. Can I just say that if I were to die, can this guy narrarate my life? As the video said humor is also good at managaing your depression and I found reassuring as I usually like to rely on humor to cope with my situations. Managing and talking with people can truly help with one's depression.

    3. i think at some point we've all felt like that. we all need to find our way of coping- and yess humor is in my opinion one of the best ways even if it's just to take your mind off things for a while

  10. First off, I have to say holy shit. This video was so accurate to my life at the moment. It's actually pretty crazy. It reminded me of things that I already knew but had forgotten. I'm going through a big black dog moment all day today and for the past few weeks. This video was very helpful. I'm not sure what you asked us to answer or write about, but I'm very glad i choose today to watch this video and not over the weekend. This video honestly made me rethink everything. No matter how strong you are in life, everyone will have this moment. It's how you approach it is what separates you from the rest.

    1. i personally agree with you Josh because your right about everyone feeling this way. i went through a stage like this and now i realize that the reason i felt so sad everyday regardless of what happened through out the day was because i wanted to be strong and keep everything in. but its true, talking things out do help you feel better.

  11. watching this video, made me sad to know that EVERYONE can become depressed, even the ones you would have never suspected. but why a dog as an example, doggies are so much fun to play with! <3

  12. Depressed people don't really like sympathetic people, sympathetic people just feel bad for them and are unable to connect with the depressed person and that just makes them feel even more alone. an empathetic person knows how depressed person feels and can create a connection which could make the depressed person not feel so alone. a depressed person isn't going to take advice from a person that hasn't gone through depression before, they are more likely gonna take it from the person who understands what they're going through. i think the first step in recovery of depression that is not caused because of medical ailment is just having someone to talk to who can understand.

    1. I don't think it's fair to say that just because a person can't relate it doesn't mean they aren't genuinely concerned and can't understand.

      Delete
    2. i don't agree with the idea that sympathetic people just feel sorry/ bad for depressed people. i think the reason why they act so distant about it is because maybe when they went through the same stage, they didn't have anyone to talk to or weren't comfortable to talk about this opening.

  14. Before learning about this disorder i thought it could be fixed by just taking pills. I now know that depression is very serious and should never be taken lightly. Having this can drastically alter a person's life. Someone with depression should be open with people and seek help. It must be a terrible feeling to feel the need to hide it from people. I think if people were less judgemental then more people would be comfortable with opening up and talking about their depression.

  16. I think by symbolizing depression as a black dog was really clever in order to show what depression does to a person. I thought it was really clever how the video explained depression symptoms, and how the big black dog caused all of it, like when he lost his appetite ( the big black dog was sitting on top of the food) and how he got really angry at people (cue dog biting his hand). Overall, I think it was a great video that shows how depression affects a person.

  17. Well, I may be completely off, but this reminds me of the Futurama episode where this artist was super famous, and as his ego grew, his watchdog grew as well, it was super weird; but hey when you feed it more of something of course it's going to grow.

  18. "depression hurts, cymbalta can help." CAN help. not will.. yeah. medication ain't the only, or best answer.
A person suffering from depression may not open up for several reasons. One could be because they are insecure (as mentioned before), or because they do not want to worry others with their problems.
Masking it will only make it worse, sometimes it is good to wear your emotions on your sleeve.
Find help, and make that big black dog a black puppy.
Finding help is another thing, a person suffering may have to use every muscle in their body to get the help they need, it may take them years until they do, for some they never receive the help they need and it's too late. So yes, it is very important to be nice to one another, you never fully know what a person has gone through. WORLD PEACE.

  19. i don't believe depression is a disease however, it can be a psychological problem were people don't know how to actually deal with it. the big black dog video shows how everyone actually feels because being realistic, everyone at some point will feel like this. i believe people should talk about how they feel but most people don't do it because they feel like everyone will only judge them instead of actually helpping them out to get rid of the black dog.
